National Authority on Tobacco and Alcohol organized a 4 day workshop on Economics of tobacco control with the contribution of technical experts from Bloomberg TFI from 15-18th June 2017 at the Seminar room of Sethsiripaya, Battaramulla.

Workshop objectives were increase the overall knowledge of the economics of tobacco, alcohol and sugar sweetened beverages, teach about price elasticity, impact on relevant taxations on income and health disparity, get familiar with guidelines for article 6 of FCTC and illicit trade protocol, methods of controlling tax avoidance/evasion and to formulate policy relevant research questions that local researchers would want to address.

Workshop was conducted by

  • Dr.Hanna Ross,a graduate from Prague school of economics, USA and who is currently conducting research capacity building projects from Africa and Asia :
  • Corne van Wallbeek, former director of the school of Economics, University of Cape town, south Africa :
  • Rijo M.John, an economist and public health policy analyst from India.

Prof. Amala De Silva, Professor on Economics and Ms. Nilangika Fernando from Verite research also conducted two sessions. The workshop seemed to be very successful and good comments were given by the participants revealing that we were able to achieve our objectives, at the end of the workshop.
