The National Authority on Tobacco and Alcohol Act, of Sri Lanka, which deals with control of tobacco and alcohol, contains laws to implement many evidence based measures that address the harms of both tobacco and alcohol. The establishment of NATA was also a significant milestone in this region as it an independent, multispectral government agency with the powers to implement laws and other measures to address such issues. The government of Sri Lanka has identified addressing the Health, economic and social harms of these substances as a priority need to improve the quality of life and well-being of all the citizens of the country. In this respects Sri Lanka is in the process of developing and implementing comprehensive policies and legislation based on sound scientific evidence. In this background, the National Authority on Tobacco and Alcohol was partnering with the Health Intervention Technology assessment Programme (HITAP) in Thailand with the support of HEP unit WHO SEARO to conduct a study on the economic harms of tobacco and alcohol use in Sri Lanka.
